Many Catholics have inherited the faith without knowing why they are Catholic. They have never been exposed to the solid faith formation provided by the Catechism of the Catholic Church. For that reason, RENEW International has taken the four parts of the Catechism and developed the series, Why Catholic? Journey through the Catechism. Each of the four books presents essential church teachings by connecting relevant scriptural passages to direct quotations from the Catechism.
The second book in the Why Catholic? Series, The Celebration of the Christian Mystery: Sacraments, breaks open Part Two of the Catechism. The first four sessions of the book focus on the liturgy, with a special emphasis on the Eucharist, and an understanding of the sacraments. Then two sessions follow on Baptism: one on the sacrament itself, and another on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The latter offers reflections not only on the Rite, but on its meaning for us and our parishes. The last six sessions focus on each of the remaining sacraments.
In conjunction with Book Two, RENEW International presenters offer participants a specially designed faith formation workshop, entitled about Christís presence in the Liturgy as well as a retreat experience focused on the sacrament of the Eucharist.
Why Catholic? is an easy-to-use tool for individuals and/or small faith-sharing communities to reference, read, pray over, and treasure the rich resources of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. By using these materials, participants can study the Catechism of the Catholic Church in greater depth, internalize its teachings, share faith in Jesus Christ, learn more about their faith, and let their faith illuminate every aspect of their lives.
